luke murray hired boston college

Long-time assistant Luke Murray will soon be formally introduced as the new head coach at Boston College, the school announced on Thursday. Murray has been an assistant under Dan Hurley at UConn for the last five seasons, playing a key role in the Huskies’ back-to-back National Championships in 2023 and 2024, and he will remain with the team for as long as their season continues.

“Today marks a turning point in Boston College Men’s Basketball,” said BC AD Blake James. “In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball – he has helped define it. His role in building a national championship caliber program, his sophisticated offensive vision, and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him the perfect fit to lead our student-athletes. We are thrilled to welcome Luke, his wife, Kara, and their family to the BC community.”

Murray has been a high-level assistant for nearly two decades, starting out as the director of basketball operations at Quinnipiac in 2007 and working at Arizona, Wagner, Towson, Rhode Island, Xavier and Louisville along the way to Storrs in 2021. His name has come up many times over the past few years regarding major conference openings and the time has come for him to take that step down the bench to head coach.

“I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College Men’s Basketball program,” said Murray. “BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition. Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program. Go Eagles!”

A native of Connecticut, Murray is a graduate of Fairfield University, where he first started out coaching AAU basketball as a freshman in college. Outside of his recruiting and coaching prowess, he is known to college basketball fans as the son of legendary actor and comedian Bill Murray, who can often be seen in the crowd cheering on the Huskies or whichever other program Luke has worked for through his career.

Boston College, meanwhile, has been struggling through its last few coaching tenures. The Eagles last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and won their last conference title in 2005 when they were still in the Big East. In fact, BC has finished 10th or worse in the ACC in each of the last 13 seasons. Former head coach Earl Grant was let go earlier this month after five years at the helm, leaving with a 72-92 overall record.
